Manuscript, on paper, of a commonplace book containing Biblical notes, sermon outlines and texts, intermingled with lists of accounts paid and tithes received by William Barlee, rector of Brockhall. There are full-length sermons on James 4:10; Isaiah 58:1-3 (headed "fastyng"); and Nehemiah 9:33-38. The tithe receipts are fairly detailed and list payments from John Thornton, who held the advowson of Brockhall; Dorothy, Countess of Sunderland, and her son, Lord Spencer; and many parishoners. The accounts detail militia fees to "the country militia" in 1646; to "Sir. Thos. Fairfax his Army" in 1649; and to "Cromwells Army" in 1650. They also list contributions "toward the trained bands since November 7, 1660" and poll tax payments.
